hOMemade Sunscreen Recipe

We all love to  have that sun kissed glow to our skin, yet we also know the importance of protection. You might not know but I am a sun lover, not only did i name my cat Surya after the sun, well he chose the card, and synchronicity would have it his name mirrors is glorious reddy tones like the sun. well Since moving to the tropics i’ve wanted to use a more natural skin protection and i’ve come up with a simple one!

Protection is really important in the sun and since we are now coming into the peak of summer I thought i’d share my new hOMemade Sunscreen recipe

Did you know that there are many natural SPF (sun protection factor) out there? I now prefer using my hOMemade sunscreen recipe as now I am not putting lots of chemicals on my skin so here are some natural SPF ::

Almond Oil- SPF about 5
Coconut Oil- SPF 4-6
Shea Butter – SPF 4-6
Carrot Seed Oil – SPF 35-40
Zinc Oxide SPF 2-20 depending on how much used (non-nano version so not absorbed into the skin and please do not inhale it use a mask if wish)

I got my zinc oxide from eBay and the others you can find on the same marketplace or online or in your shops!

so you ready?

My hOMemade Sunscreen Recipe

homemadesunscreeningredients

50-100ml Coconut oil – please notice that mine is liquid as it 30 degrees here! yours may be solid
Shea butter 50-100ml
ॐ carrot seed oil 1teaspoon – 1 tablespoon
zinc oxide (optional) 1 tablespoon

how to make hOMemade Sunscreen Recipe

  1. get a pot and put a little water in the bottom and bring to the boil, then turn down
  2. put all ingredients into a jar or bowl and then put the jar or bowl into the pot of simmering water
  3. slowly all the ingredients will begin to melt, stir occassionally
  4. take off heat and begin to stir in the zinc oxide, keep stirring until it all comes together
  5. leave in the jar or bowl to solidify or if like me you are in a hot country i put mine in the fridge

all these ingredients for the hOMemade sunscreen recipe make the SPF however because there is no regulation i cannot say what the actual SPF is. I personally have combined different batches with more carrot seed for a higher factor. a word of caution for the zinc oxide do not inhale it and use the non-nano version. I prefer now having made lots of batches to not use the zinc oxide 9 so if you wish to make some and i see you when in London let me know and i will give you some of mine!). i use more carrot seed oil to produce a higher factor.

I keep my blend in jar in fridge so its solid and then bring it out to melt and transfer to a bottle for the beach. It will last for about 6 months, however i make small batches and its gone within a month!

I apply my blend frequently and have never burned and it’s a great moisturiser too!

for your skin you will need to test.

I will honestly say that i do use a higher factor of bought sunscreen for my face, neck and chest area, as my skin is more sensitive… so for you, it’s a matter of trying a small area of your body first as burning is not a good option. somewhere like arms that get a lot of exposure. test for an hour and see and please use more carrot seed oil and zinc oxide first! i’d say for every 50 ml of shea butter and 50 ml of coconut oil, use 1 teaspoon of carrot seed oil and 1 tablespoon since oxide

wishing you a happy skin safe summer!
